Raising Capital

• Louisiana Tax Credit Resources - Louisiana has some fantastic tax credits to encourage economic development. I've some research papers on these and look forward to using them on future startups.
• Seed & Grant Funding Resources - If you're not ready for VC investment yet, or you're a lifestyle business rather than high growth business, these resources can help you get started.
• Venture Capital Resources - Local and out of state resources including VC firms, Incubators, Angel Networks.
• Bootstrapping - Skip the capital and run your business.  Warning, this may lead to credit card debt.

Startup Ecosystem

I have been talking with a lot of friends in New Orleans and Louisiana about our desire to have a stronger social fabric in the startup, tech, and social entrepreneurship community.  There are a number of movements underway to connect us, aggregate info, and get our message out there.  I'm adding to that with a wiki-based list that I encourage you to add yourself to.

• CrunchBase - TechCrunch is compiling what I would expect to be the most comprehensive database of startups, we're on there, and you should be too
• Web Development Resources - Web development, SEO / SEM, Freelancers. People ask me for recommendations a lot.  Here's my list.  Add yourself.
• Web Designers - We were looking to hire one and here's who applied.  Add yourself so next time we can hire you.

Movements / (Un)Organizations

I love the concept of unconferences because many organizations I've been a part of is more focused on the bureaucratic, administrative elements of themselves, while neglecting their mission.  After the dot.bomb meltdown in 2001, a new breed of grass roots organizations sprang up that I've been involved with and I am passionate about.  Here are some of them:

• BarCamp - An unconference for geeks and people on the web. We hosted the first ever in Russia in 2007 and in New Orleans in 2008.  I've attended BarCamps in Miami, Austin, Houston, and San Francisco.
• WordCampNOLA - John Ramirez and I have been organizing this conference.  Check out the speakers.
• Co-Working - We have a group called Jelly New Orleans that meets every other Friday for coworking.
• Net2NO - NetSquared is an organization that leverages the social web for socially positive organizations. Join us.
• Social Media Club - We're trying to get this launched.
